Details matter

Making anything takes time, and quite often the details get squeezed and pushed back down the priority list because there’s no clear, provable value in spending time on them rather than something that’s seen as more “critical” to getting a piece finished.

It can also be frustrating for people looking on to see time and effort spent on something they don’t understand, especially if they’re keen to see the thing done.

Emotion is a large component of any piece of work — how it makes someone feel has a significant impact on how they recall it later and their lasting impression of it.

If a piece is frustrating or flat to look at, but technically “complete”, what people remember is the flatness, not that it was finished.

Spending time getting the details right is important, but it’s similarly important to go beyond a “just good enough” effort to positively shape how someone feels about the finished piece.
