About Design At The End Of The World

I'm Tom, a Digital Designer & Front-End Developer from the south of the UK. Design At The End Of The World is a way to showcase some of my design projects and talk about stuff like theme park design, web design and probably a load of other stuff too.

I've practiced web and digital design for around 13 years, but was inpired to start drawing parallels between digital and physical design after visiting the Walk Disney World theme parks.

At Disney's Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World, just opposite Muppet Vision 3D (RIP) there is a sign for the PizzeRizzo restaurant, ostensibly run by Rizzo the rat. The lights on the 'The City's Top Rated Pizza' lettering blink on and off in such a way it sometimes leaves 'It's Rat Pizza' lit:

When I noticed it I laughed a lot, It seemed such a fun little detail, and maybe one which some might have deemed unnecessary, you know someone had to fight for the budget for that one! It started me thinking about how the user experience of something physical and the user experience of something digital aren't all that different.

Presumably you've gathered that I'm also very interested in physical user experiences, particularly those in theme parks. I believe that there are lessons to be learned for digital designers from the care and attention to detail that is shown to elevating guest experiences at those attractions – and often theme parks are just more fun to talk about.

I'm not going to be stuffy about anything I write, if I see something I like, or make something I'm proud of then I'll probably post about it – and throw in a few self-deprecating jokes while i'm at it. So I hope you get some value from what I'm blogging and thanks for visiting!
